Parker Brothers Releases Global Warming Monopoly

Monopoly aficionados across the world rejoiced Saturday with the release of the newest installment of Special Edition Monopoly games: Global Warming Monopoly.  In a recent press release Parks Brothers said it was ready to "heat things up" with this new take on a family classic.

Instead of shelling out play money in an often cutthroat competition to own as much property as possible, players' objective is to have a monopoly over the ozone layer.  Squares with street names like Baltic Avenue have been replaced with sections of the world labeled "Top Half of Africa" and "South Atlantic Ocean," to name a couple.  When a player lands on a part of Planet Earth, he or she has the opportunity to burn various sized holes in the ozone layer above that section of the globe.

The official rules state:The object of the game is to be the player to burn away the greatest surface area of ozone layer from around the Earth.  Players may buy, sell, and trade fossil fuels to accomplish this end.

While gamers won't find "Get Out of Jail Free" cards in this Monopoly, there are several "Ignore Al Gore" cards that will give lucky players a break. Game pieces include an underwater Statue of Liberty, a polar bear wearing sunglasses and a Hawaiian shirt, and a tiny bottle of hairspray.

Gary McDowell, spokesperson for the Friends of the United States National Global Warming Awareness Association, was one of the first to purchase the game.

"I've always been a fan of Monopoly, but I'm a little worried that this might prevent the general public from taking global warming seriously--that people will think it's some kind of game."
