Sophia Jennings of Carversville, Mississippi always
wanted to be a writer. When her story was selected out of 14 elementary schools
in the region to compete in a national fiction-writing competition, the story, “Shooting Stars are Targeting the EARTH?”, placed first.
Coincidentally, two weeks later, Weather.com published the same
headline.
“It was fate,” said Cal Hipjingle, Editor-in-Chief of
Weather.com. “At first we were all, ‘What a disaster—we’ve stolen this
little girl’s headline!’ Then we were like, ‘You know what, let’s just hire her!’”
Nine-year-old Sophia was added to the Weather.com payroll last week,
making her the fourth youngest employee at the national weather website. Says
Sophia after her first week on the job: “It’s really great because I get to use
my imagination and caps lock A LOT.”
Sophia states that she is unsure if this will be a permanent
career path for her, but she is open to every possibility and will just see
where the weather takes her.
